Fake Silver Bars

Any backstory? Where was it found?

I saw the image posted on X recently. Did a reverse image search, which led to a Reddit post from 2 years ago.

The exterior is real silver. The shop owner told me it was a scandal at the end of Engelhard business when ppl actually working at the refinery we're doing this to rip off the company and unsuspecting public. I'm not sure if they bought the bar or what the story is beyond that.

Scary stuff. With 100oz bars especially, I’d treat “too good to be true” as a red flag and lean heavily on basic checks first (dimensions/weight), then verify with a proper tester (XRF if you can, otherwise at least a decent ultrasonic + magnet/slide test combo).

Also worth remembering: tungsten/lead-filled fakes can pass a few quick tests, so buying from reputable dealers (and keeping receipts/serials/photos) matters more than people think.

If you’re ever sanity-checking value vs. weight (as a quick baseline when comparing bars/coins), a simple weight-to-melt calculator can help before you go deeper: https://mygoldcalc.com
